Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small to medium-sized, terrestrial or epiphytic perennial herbs.

Stems: With compact or elongated pseudobulbs from fleshy rhizomes that root freely at the nodes.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Arising near apex of pseudobulb, 1 to several per pseudobulb. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers few to numerous in terminal, erect, racemose inflorescences, each one subtended by a small bract. Flowers bisexual (perfect), resupinate, often green to yellow or occasionally purple, sometimes fragrant. Sepals erect or reflexed, distinct, linear to linear-subulate, sometimes the lateral ones situated beneath labellum. Petals similar to sepals, sometimes situated beneath labellum; labellum adnate to column, unappendaged, not 3-lobed, often reflexed at or below middle, apex variable, apiculate,2-lobid, lacerate, crenulate, serrate, or entire. Stamen 1, adnate to and surrounding the style forming a column; column long and slender, curved, unappendaged or with 2-4 small wings near apex; anther apical, adnate to column by a thin filament, caducous. Pollinia 4, joined in 2 pairs, caudicles absent. Ovary inferior, 3-carpellate; stigma unlobed.
